Sam Loco was an accomplished artiste and gifted performer - Jonathan As Fashola Mourns Passage of Sam Loco Efe

President Goodluck Jonathan extends his sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family of renowned stage and screen actor, Sam Loco Efe, who passed away on Sunday.

The President joins millions of Nigerians who have received immense entertainment, joy and edification from Sam Loco's enthralling performances over the past five decades, in mourning his death which occurred while he was still actively engaged in a job he loved so much.

In a release by the special adviser on media and publicity Dr Reuben Abati,  President Jonathan recalls that beginning with his role in the television series, Hotel De Jordan which first aired on Nigerian Television in 1970, and his part in Langbodo – the stage play Nigeria presented for  the World Black Arts Festival, FESTAC '77, late Sam Loco remained a leading and dominant figure on the country's very vibrant acting scene until his death.

The President also believes that Sam Loco's professional accomplishments helped to raise the profile of the Nigerian actor on the contemporary stage.

He's urging members of Sam Loco's family, his fans across Nigeria, members of the Actors Guild of Nigeria and the entire Nollywood family, many of whom he influenced and inspired to pursue careers as actors and actresses, to take solace in the knowledge that he was a most accomplished artiste, a natural and gifted entertainer who will always be remembered with respect and admiration.

The President prays that God Almighty will grant Sam Loco peaceful repose.


FASHOLA MOURN Passage of Sam Loco Efe


The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Sunday mourned the passage of veteran actor, Mr. Sam Loco Efe describing him as an extraordinarily gifted thespian whose mastery of his craft on both stage and screen was unrivalled.

Governor Fashola in a condolence letter to the President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Mr. Segun Arinze noted that Mr. Efe was a cultural model, who truly belonged to the class of greats in the world of creative arts, "It is indeed heart rending to think that the very familiar face and very likeable humour merchant whom I had known since my teenage years has taken a final exit from life's stage", the letter stated.

The Governor added: "I hope that Mr. Efe's unwavering commitment to his chosen profession, discipline and legacy of high standards would serve as source of inspiration to generations of up and coming artistes."

"As you mourn this irreparable loss, my thoughts and prayers are with you, and other professional colleagues as well as family members of Mr. Efe. I pray that God grants his soul eternal rest", the letter said.

Meanwhile, recent reports confirm that Sam Loco Efe died on Sunday in a hotel room in at Rapour Hotel, Amakaohai along Orlu road in Owerri, Imo state shortly after returning from location. He was in Owerri, to direct a film titled "Unknown Prophet".

Sam Loco was said to have asked the cast and crew of the new film to return to their hotel rooms, hoping to continue the shooting the following morning.

Sources who spoke to newsmen said that his colleagues who were worried when he didn't come down for breakfast had alerted the hotel management and after  banging on the door of his room, forced the door open only to discover his lifeless body on the bed.

There were conflicting reports as to the real state of health before his demise. While some said he was hale and hearty before his demise, others said he was ill while on the movie set.

Eye witness account said the Edo State born actor had gone to sleep after concluding the day's shooting and was reported to have complained of a heart problem
