The champions suffered a first home league defeat for over a year in the Revierderby against Die Konigsblauen as Ibrahim Afellay and Marco Hoger struck to put the visitors 2-0 ahead before Robert Lewandowski pulled a goal in the 55th minute.
Nevertheless, the BVB trainer has insisted the defeat is his fault, as the hosts fall a sizeable 12 points behind current league leaders Bayern Munich.
"We did not play well. I take this like [it is] my fault. I wanted to help with the upgrade of the team," Klopp told Sky Sports Germany.
"That honestly did not work so good, that one must [be looked] at."
Defender Mats Hummels was scathing in his remarks about the opposition, particularly hitting out at the time wasted by Schalke.
"I've never seen a team as sporting and fair as Schalke," the 23-year-old sarcastically jested to Bild.
"From the 10th minute of the game they were [wasting] time and faking injuries. I hope that during the season, they are not further rewarded by the referees, but are punished."
Dortmund resume Champions League action this week against Real Madrid at Signal Iduna Park.
