Amanda Holden has given birth to a baby girl, but has spent the past three days in hospital in a "critical condition".
Her spokeswoman confirmed the Britain's Got Talent judge gave birth on Monday but had been treated in an intensive care unit following her admission to hospital.
Alison Griffin added: "She is now stable and we expect her to make a full recovery very soon."
No details of her condition have been released but Patrick O'Brien, a consultant obstetrician from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, said bleeding during or after birth is one of the most dangerous complications patients can face.
He said there are several reasons a woman might bleed after the baby has been
delivered, including tearing, the placenta becoming trapped inside, or because the uterus has not contracted after the birth and the blood vessels bleed heavily.
"The risk of bleeding is related to how the baby is born. It is lowest with a successful vaginal birth, it is higher with a planned Caesarean section and highest with an emergency caesarean," he said.
"Bleeding can be very dangerous and is the highest cause of dying in childbirth. Women can end up with blood transfusions and in rare occasions hysterectomies."
The 40-year-old actress and her husband Chris Hughes have named their newborn Hollie Rose, who weighed in at 6lb 1oz and was described as "healthy".
The couple already have a daughter, Lexi.
Holden gave birth to a stillborn baby in 2011 after suffering a miscarriage the year before.
The actress had been due to attend the Blackpool auditions for Britain's Got Talent this week.
Speaking at the National Television Awards, Ant and Dec passed on a message of support, saying: "We wish them all the best and hopefully she'll be fighting fit and back on the (BGT) panel soon.
Also on the red carpet, TV presenter Philip Schoffield said: "I had no idea she was so poorly so lots of love to her and to Chris and to the baby Hollie as well."
Last week, Holden proudly showed off her large baby bump when she attended auditions in Manchester, but faced criticism for wearing high heels.
In response, the star tweeted: "I walk less than 25 metres a day in heels whilst up the duff!"
A spokeswoman for Britain's Got Talent said: "We extend our congratulations to Amanda and Chris on the birth of Hollie and wish Amanda a speedy recovery.
"We look forward to her returning to Britain's Got Talent very soon."
