Play by Play Liverpool 1-3 Swansea City: Suarez strike not enough as holders crash out

… - All over here at Anfield, with Liverpool crashing out.
… - Thanks for joining our live commentary here on Goal.com, and we'll see you next time.
… - Swansea advance to the last eight of this competition for the first time in their 100 year history, and will eagerly await tonight's quarter-final draw.
… - Rodgers will be deeply disappointed at how his side performed, regardless of the number of changes he made to his line-up. Joe Cole, for example, looked way off the pace as the hosts struggled - particularly before the break.
… - Michu was a class above for most of the night, with his hold-up play and intricate passing causing the home side problems all night.
… - The Reds may be the current holders of the cup, but they looked second best for much of this game, with Swansea's pace on the break causing all sorts of problems and setting up both of their goals in the second period.
… - It's a Halloween haunting for Brendan Rodgers then, who has seen his Liverpool side beaten fairly comfortably by his old club Swansea, thanks to goals from Chico, Dyer and de Guzman.
90′ + 4 - Goal - Jonathan De Guzmán (Swansea) And that's the game!! Swansea 3-1, de Guzman wrapping it up and knocking the holders out of the Capital One Cup. The visitors break away yet again, with Michu turning provider this time, rolling the ball across the box to de Guzman, who taps home for a simple finish.
90′ + 3 - Liverpool can't seem to create at the moment, with Downing's cross easily headed clear.
90′ + 1 - It's getting a tad scrappy, especially from Swansea. Can they hold on?
90′ - A generous five minutes are to be added on here, which seems a lot considering Chico's injury was the only real stoppage, with that lasting barely two minutes.
88′ - Swansea try to keep the ball up the pitch and contain the hosts, but there's still time for Liverpool here.
87′ - Excellent play from Liverpool and brilliant feet from Suarez again nearly forces the equaliser but Tremmel saves well with his legs. Sterling then drags a shot wide from 20 yards.
85′ - The Reds are trying to force the issue, with Sterling having a crack from distance, before Gerrard tries a harmless looping ball over the top. Time is ticking here.
83′ - Brilliant quick feet from Suarez see's him almost supply a dangerous cross. The ball is cleared and then crossed back in, but Suarez handles and the balls goes out.
81′ - You get the feeling the final 10 minutes are going to be all Liverpool as they search for an equaliser, with Downing testing Tremmel from distance.
79′ - This time Michu does get the ball in the box, and the Swansea number nine see's his effort blocked by Jones once more.
78′ - Michu nearly breaks for Swansea again, but Liverpool are saved by the offside flag.
76′ - Goal - Luis Suárez (Liverpool) Gerrard's free-kick finds Suarez, who flicks the ball brilliantly into Tremmel's net with his head. The Reds are back in it, game on!!
75′ - Substitution Pablo Hernández Wayne Routledge (Swansea)
75′ - Sterling wins a free-kick for Liverpool on the left, and Gerrard will swing it in.
73′ - Liverpool looking a little shell-shocked by the second, having looked like they were going to get back into this match.
72′ - Goal - Nathan Dyer (Swansea) And now the Swans double their lead!! Brilliant break from the away side, who may well be dumping their old manager out of the Capital One Cup. After pinball in the Swansea box, Michu flicks the ball to Hernandez, who bursts into the Liverpool half. As he runs into the box, he squares to Dyer who has managed to keep pace, and the winger taps in the second goal.
69′ - Michu forces Jones into a brilliant fingertip save, as his left-footed effort is tipped over. From the corner, Williams is free but heads wide. Swansea seem to be getting it together now after a slow start to the half.
67′ - Liverpool at sixes and sevens now up the other end, as Swansea almost double their lead. Jones first parries away Hernandez's effort, then beats away Michu's rebound. Carragher then blocks another follow-up shot, and Swansea win a corner. Jonathan de Guzman's cross is punched away by Jones, and Britton lashes over. A frantic 30 seconds at the Kop End.
66′ - Liverpool starting to threaten more now, with Shelvey's low ball zipping across the six-yard box and into the grateful hands of Tremmel.
65′ - Substitution Oussama Assaidi Raheem Sterling (Liverpool)
65′ - Huge chance for the Reds to equalise! Gerrard lines-up a trademark screamer from distance, with his shot crashing against the post. With Tremmel beaten, Downing somehow stabs the rebound wide with his right-foot. Should have scored.
63′ - A sloppy header back to Jones almost drops to Michu. Liverpool get lucky when Jones collects.
61′ - Assaidi - who has been largely anonymous - puts a cross into the stands, and with Raheem Sterling get ready on the touchline, that could well be the Moroccan's last action.
59′ - Good strength down the right from Dyer, before he loses the ball without creating a chance for the waiting Michu.
58′ - Substitution Chico Garry Monk (Swansea)
57′ - Chico has had to depart after that break in play, and is replaced by 33-year-old club captain Garry Monk - the man who scored the winner in the last round against Crawley.
54′ - Swansea are looking sloppy in a way they didn't in the opening 45, with Williams presenting Suarez with a half-chance. Again, the striker lashes his effort over the top though, as the physio is called on to treat goalscorer Chico Flores.
53′ - Gerrard's low, bouncing cross into the box almost causes trouble, but Swansea get it clear.
50′ - Swansea attempting to slow things down already and see a bit more of the ball, but Liverpool are certainly looking better for their half-time changes.
48′ - First chance for Suarez, as Liverpool already look more positive. Shelvey's outside of the boot cross finds the Uruguayan forward, who can't keep his header down on the stretch. Unlucky, but the Reds already looking better.
47′ - Suarez shows neat footwork, but Leon Britton is aware to the threat and blocks his path before he can get a shot off.
46′ - Substitution Samed Yeşil Luis Suárez (Liverpool)
46′ - Substitution Joe Cole Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)
46′ - Liverpool nearly equalise straight away! Neat play from Joe Allen picks out Shelvey, who evades a challenge and gets his shot off. Tremmel will be pleased to see the ball sail over the bar and away from danger.
46′ - We're underway.
… - Liverpool emerge for the second half looking stronger, with both Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez taking to the field it seems. Joe Cole and Samed Yesil are to be replaced as the Capital One Cup holders try to fight their way back into this year's competition. Game on.
… - The Welsh club have never advanced past this stage of the competition, but Michael Laudrup will hope that statistic is going to change tonight.
… - Swansea deserve their lead, with Michu, Hernandez, Dyer and Ki all looking positive going forward. Their goal was simple stuff really, with Chico losing his marker and meeting de Guzman's corner with ease. His header looped into the far corner, giving Jones no chance.
… - So half-time then in a game where Liverpool haven't really got going at all. Assaidi and Cole have looked largely anonymous for the home side, whilst Yesil is being bullied by the experienced defenders he's up against.
45′ + 1 - Yellow Card - Jamie Carragher (Liverpool) Positive hold-up play again from Michu, and he wins his side a free kick on the half-way line. That should bring about an end to the half.
45′ + 1 - That's it, half-time here and Swansea City lead 1-0.
43′ - Liverpool look flat and out of ideas at the moment, they need half-time to come.
41′ - Another smart move from the away side, with Michu and Hernandez linking up again. The forward's clever flick goes back to the midfielder, but he slices over the top from well outside the box.
40′ - Downing wriggles away from a couple of challenges to get a shot off, but it flashes wide. There's no touch, though the winger appeals for a corner.
38′ - Samed Yesil tries to create a chance for himself, but can't get his shot away.
37′ - Nathan Dyer looks really up for this tonight, and his pace down the wings is causing Jamie Carragher and makeshift right-back Jordan Henderson problems.
35′ - Joe Cole almost equalises instantly with a header, but his weak effort is easy for Tremmel to gather.
34′ - Goal - Chico (Swansea) Swansea are finally ahead, after being much the better side for the last 20 minutes. De Guzman's corner is met by an unmarked Chico, and the visitors take a deserved lead.
32′ - Jones is called into action again, thanks to another long-range effort from Ki. Corner to Swansea.
31′ - Lovely ball in from Downing on the right, cutting onto his favoured left foot. Jonjo Shelvey almost gets on the end of it.
29′ - Best chance of the game so far, and it falls to the visitors. Michu wins the ball deep in Swansea territory and sets Dyer free. The winger plays a cute pass across to de Guzman, but he fluffs his chip over the top of the bar. He really should've got it on target, or passed to Michu, who was in support. Big chance.
26′ - Downing has a crack from distance for Liverpool, and Tremmel parries it around the post.
25′ - Nathan Dyer excellently dispossesses Joe Allen, and wins the Swans a corner. Brad Jones flaps at the cross, but Liverpool clear.
23′ - Michu and Pablo Hernandez link up for the best move of a slow game so far. An intricate one-two ends with Hernandez almost getting his shot in, but his effort is well blocked. That almost caused Jones a problem, but luckily Carragher was in the way.
19′ - After a slow start, Swansea are really putting some passes together now. The game is still lacking any real goalmouth action though.
18′ - Swansea are getting going a bit now, and Ki is the next player to try from distance, firing wide.
14′ - Swansea go more direct and Nathan Dyer almost latches on to the through ball from Ashley Williams. His touch just evades him, and goes through for Brad Jones to collect.
12′ - Pablo Hernandez has Swansea's first effort, but it sails way over the bar.
10′ - Michu has looked a little isolated up front for the Swans so far, and has barely had a touch.
9′ - Joe Cole looks a little sloppy in possession and tries a pot-shot. The ball trickles to Yesil who takes aim, and wins a corner.
6′ - Liverpool have certainly started brighter here, but haven't managed to create anything as yet.
3′ - The Swansea fans were heard singing 'There's only one Joe Allen' a moment ago. A nice touch for their former midfielder.
2′ - Downing seems to have started on the right for Liverpool, and an early cross almost finds Assaidi.
1′ - We're underway at a nearly full Anfield.
… - And their subs are: Cornell, Monk, Davies, Agustien, Shechter, Routledge, Graham.
… - Swansea boss Michael Laudrup has named a strong team, but is of course without the injured star keeper Michel Vorm. They line up 4-5-1: Tremmel; Tiendalli, Williams, Chico, Richards; Britton, de Guzman, Ki, Dyer, Hernandez; Michu.
… - And yes, that was Jordan Henderson at right-back!! Their subs look strong: Ward, Suarez, Gerrard, Suso, Sterling, Skrtel, Wisdom.
… - Rodgers had made a number of changes to the line-up which drew with city rivals Everton last Sunday. Liverpool start 4-2-3-1: Jones; Henderson, Robinson, Coates, Carragher; Shelvey, Allen; Cole Assaidi, Downing; Yesil.
… - It's a chilling evening in Merseyside, but hopefully we'll have a game to warm everybody's spirits in a way that Arsenal and Reading managed last night!!
… - Good evening everybody, and happy Halloween!! Welcome to Goal.com's live text commentary of the Capital One Cup clash between Brendan Rodgers' Liverpool side, and his former club Swansea City.
