Madrid slide to Dortmund defeat

Borussia Dortmund 2-1 Real Madrid:

Play by Play

… - That's all from me for this evening guys and girls, thanks for joining me! I'm Charlie Scott, you are all wonderful, good night!
… - FULL-TIME: BORUSSIA DORTMUND 2-1 REAL MADRID What a valuable three points that could prove for the Bundesliga side! Marcel Schmelzer scored the goal that sealed the win in the second half, after Cristiano Ronaldo had cancelled out Robert Lewandowski's opener on 36 minutes. Jurgen Klopp will be delighted with the professionalism shown by his team tonight, as they go top of Group D having secured 7 points from their first three matches.
90′ + 5 - And there is the final whistle!! Dortmund have shocked Real Madrid and run out 2-1 winners to go top of Group D.
90′ + 4 - Hummels is there to head the ball away though, just as he has been all night. What a performance from the German centre-back!
90′ + 3 - Yellow Card - Ilkay Gündogan (Borussia Dortmund)
90′ + 3 - Ronaldo is muscled off the ball on the halfway line but the referee deems it a foul and Madrid have one last chance to launch the ball long into the Dortmund box.
90′ + 2 - Madrid are heading towards their fourth away defeat of the season in all competitions already and it's still October!
90′ + 1 - Substitution Marco Reus Ivan Perisic (Borussia Dortmund)
90′ + 1 - There will be three minutes of added time here...
90′ - Dortmund have defended brilliantly for 90 minutes and show no signs of letting up in that department as we head into added time. Hummels forces the ball away from his own area under pressure from Ronaldo on this occasion.
89′ - ESSIEN MISSES THE TARGET!! The Real Madrid full-back sends a header wide of the post on the left after being found by a neat cross from Di Maria. Mourinho's men can't afford to waste chances like that!
88′ - The corner is cleared away by Ronaldo though, with Madrid running out of time here as they search for a late equaliser.
87′ - Substitution Mario Götze Julian Schieber (Borussia Dortmund)
87′ - Dortmund win what feels like their 30th corner of the game, and with the ball in their possession decide to make another change to waste some valuable seconds. Julian Schieber comes on for Mario Gotze for the home side.
86′ - Di Maria's passing has been outrageously good tonight but his shooting has left A LOT to be desired... He's guilty of wasting another opportunity as he smashes a shot high over Weidenfeller's crossbar from 25 yards.
85′ - Ramos and Alonso are showing little regard to the fact they are both on yellow cards in this match as they both go flying into tackles inside their own half. Then again, this is a big match for Madrid, should Dortmund win they will overtake their opponents and go top of Group D.
84′ - Nearly a superb own goal from Schmelzer!! Weidenfeller has to backpedal and jump to his left to stop the ball from finding the back of the net after it had ballooned off his defender's boot and up into the air.
83′ - Reus takes the corner himself but is cleared away by Pepe. The home side win another corner on the right shortly after though, but again the delivery lands straight on the head of a Madrid defender and is nodded away from goal.
82′ - Down goes Reus inside the Madrid box looking for a penalty, but Alonso clearly won the ball and the Dortmund player is lucky to even get a corner after the ball clearly struck him before going behind.
81′ - Ronaldo comes within inches of connecting with a divine pass courtesy of the left boot of Angel Di Maria but the ball just runs too far ahead of him and Weidenfeller is able to sweep it up for the home side.
80′ - SURELY THAT'S A PENALTY FOR DORTMUND?? Pepe pushes Gotze to the deck as the Dortmund attacker surges into the box but the referee waves play on. The Madrid centre-back is not playing well tonight, he was lucky to get away with that!
78′ - Dortmund's Großkreutz shoots over the bar from the right side of the penalty area which results in a couple of surly glances from Robert Lewandowski who was screaming for a pass from his team-mate.
77′ - Di Maria cuts in from this position on he right and attempts to thread a pass through to Ronaldo but Subotic reads the play well to intercept the ball and pass it out of defence.
76′ - Gundogan goes down under a challenge from Alonso in the centre circle as the game goes through a stop-start couple of minutes here.
74′ - Ozil whips the resulting corner into the box but Hummels is there once more to head the ball away and avert the danger for Jurgen Klopp's side.
73′ - Substitution Karim Benzema Gonzalo Higuaín (Real Madrid CF)
73′ - Ramos does brilliantly to come away with the ball after tussling with Hummels from the free-kick and Madrid immediately look to counter as they chase the game. Di Maria hammers a wonderful volleyed pass towards Ronaldo at the back post but Schmelzer is there ahead of him to nod the ball behind for a corner kick.
72′ - Pepe catches Reus and Dortmund have another free-kick, again on the right-hand side. They have looked the stronger side at set pieces so far tonight...
71′ - Madrid look set to make another change, with Gonzalo Higuain preparing himself on the sidelines.
70′ - Dortmund deserve the lead here though, they haven't allowed Madrid to settle since the break with Schmelzer's goal a just reward for their hard work in the second half.
69′ - Mourinho is out of the dugout down on the touchline, and remonstrating with his players as they struggle to keep a hold of the ball in midfield. He does not look happy.
67′ - Substitution Sven Bender Ilkay Gündogan (Borussia Dortmund)
67′ - Dortmund make their first change of the evening, replacing Sven Bender with the midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.
66′ - Goals galore in Group D tonight it seems. Ajax have increased their lead against Manchester City, with the score now 3-1 in Amsterdam.
65′ - Casillas perhaps at fault there, as his punch from Gotze's cross failed to clear his own penalty area. Dortmund won't mind, they are in the lead and will go top of the group if the score stays the same!
64′ - Goal - Marcel Schmelzer (Borussia Dortmund) DORTMUND TAKE THE LEAD THROUGH SCHMELZER!! The full-back strikes a hard low effort into the bottom left corner after Casillas' punched clearance fell at his feet on the edge of the Madrid box. The shot took a slight deflection on its way in but unsurprisingly Schmelzer is claiming it!
63′ - Madrid clear the free-kick as far as Bender 30 yards from goal but his first-time effort is a long, long way from causing Casillas any problems.
63′ - FREE-KICK TO DORTMUND!! Gotze draws a foul from Alonso with a neat stepover on the right, and wins a well-positioned free-kick for his side.
62′ - Yellow Card - Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid CF)
62′ - Di Maria sends a searching ball towards Ronaldo with his left foot but Hummels shows his aerial ability by comfortably beating the Madrid man in the air and heading the ball to his team-mate Schmelzer.
61′ - The attacker's effort fails to beat the Dortmund wall though, as the ball strikes Lewandowski and is deflected away from danger.
60′ - Hummels catches Ozil with a rash tackle 40 yards from goal and guess who fancies this free-kick for Madrid?
59′ - Credit to the Dortmund support by the way, they have been magnificent tonight, the atmosphere at Signal Iduna Park has been superb.
58′ - Pepe will want to forget this game in a hurry... He's just gifted Dortmund possession AGAIN just outside his own penalty area. The home side work the ball well between Reus, Piszczek and Bender, with the latter of the three eventually firing an effort at goal that flies a couple of yards or so over Casillas' crossbar.
56′ - CHANCE FOR BENZEMA!! The Frenchman just fails to add the finishing touches for Madrid after being found by an enticing cross from the left by Michael Essien. That could, and perhaps should have been 2-1!
55′ - DI MARIA DRAGS A SHOT JUST WIDE!! Benzema turns inside the centre cirlce superbly before playing a reverse pass into the path of Di Maria who is cutting in from the right. The Argentine looks to slot the ball into the far corner from the left-hand side of the penalty area but under pressure from Schmelzer his effort goes just wide of the post.
54′ - Elsewhere in Group D Ajax have taken the lead at home to Manchester City. It's 2-1 to the hosts now.
53′ - While we're applauding Casillas it seems like a perfect time to congratulate the Madrid skipper on making his 125th Champions League appearance for the club tonight. He is now equal with Clarence Seedorf in third place on the all-time list behind former Madrid team-mate Raul (142) and Ryan Giggs (130).
51′ - Casillas punches the ball away from the resulting corner from Reus, before Ramos is forced to dig the ball out from underneath his own crossbar from another corner from the Dortmund youngster. Backs against the wall stuff for Madrid at the moment!
50′ - THAT IS A WORLD CLASS SAVE FROM CASILLAS!! Piszczek races into the area on the right before pulling a pass back towards Lewandowski near the penalty spot. He cleverly steps over the ball and allows it to run to Gotze who then forces Casillas into making a fine diving stop with his curling effort from 15 yards.
49′ - Mourinho's side work the ball forward on the right-hand side through Di Maria and Ramos but are shepherded away from goal and are forced to start the move from scratch as the ball finds its way back to Raphael Varane in defence.
48′ - YELLOW CARD FOR RAMOS!! The Madrid right-back goes into the referee's book after clattering into Schmelzer as the Dortmund full-back looks to get forward down the left.
47′ - Yellow Card - Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid CF)
47′ - Pepe gives the ball away again in a dangerous area!! The Madrid defender is lucky Dortmund don't make his sloppiness pay as they work the ball towards goal before Ramos wins it back off Gotze for the visitors.
46′ - Slightly behind the other games tonight Dortmund get the second half underway. Not sure what the reason was for the delay here! This game is starting up again a full five minutes after the other Group D match.
… - Elsewhere in Group D we have a mirror score of the one here, as Ajax and Manchester City are drawing 1-1 in Amsterdam. Samir Nasri gave City the lead halfway through the half before Siem De Jong equalised for the home side just before the break.
… - Oooo and here's another nice stat, I'm spoiling you in this half-time break. That goal from Ronaldo means Real Madrid have now scored in 14 consecutive away matches in the Champions League, which equals the all-time record held by Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
… - STAT: Ronaldo has now scored 28 Champions League goals for Real Madrid in 31 appearances. Not bad...
… - HALF-TIME: BORUSSIA DORTMUND 1-1 REAL MADRID Lewandowski gave the home side the lead in the 36th minute with a cool finish past Casillas after a mistake from Pepe, but that didn't last long as Madrid hit back immediately through Ronaldo. The attacker lifted a fine lob over Weidenfeller to equalise for Madrid after latching on to a fabulous long pass from Ozil. It's been an exciting and open game here at the Signal Iduna Park, let's hope that continues in the second half!
45′ + 3 - And there is the half-time whistle. It's all square here at the break!
45′ + 2 - Ramos has a chance to test Weidenfeller from 20 yards but after feinting to shoot with his left and cutting back on to his favoured right he slices the shot high and wide of the Dortmund goal. That was disappointing, even for a centre-back/right-back.
45′ + 1 - The fourth official signals there will be two minutes of added time here.
45′ - Madrid are putting pressure on the Dortmund defence high up the pitch in the last few minutes of this half, but it is the home side that fashion a chance as we head towards the break. Gotze arrows a shot at goal from 25 yards but it is easily dealt with by Casillas in the Madrid goal.
43′ - Ramos catches Großkreutz on the right and Dortmund are awarded a free-kick late in the half here.
42′ - There aren't many nicer images in football than seeing Hummels marauding out of defence with the ball at his feet, but it nearly catches his side out on this occasion!! The defender brings the ball forward but a return pass doesn't reach him and Madrid very nearly slide a through ball to Benzema with the centre-back out of position.
40′ - Another mistake from the Madrid defence nearly allows Lewandowski another run at goal, but Reus' pass to him is just overhit after Essien had given away the ball on the left.
39′ - Dortmund's lead lasted long there...
38′ - Assist - Mesut Özil (Real Madrid CF)
38′ - Goal - Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid CF) RONALDO SCORES AN QUICK EQUALISER FOR MADRID!! The Portuguese attacker races on to an exquisite through ball from Ozil before lifting the ball over the onrushing Weidenfeller brilliantly to draw his side level. Game on here in Dortmund!
37′ - Pepe played the ball straight to Kehl there, and that gifted Dortmund the chance to attack, and didn't they make the most of it?
36′ - Assist - Sebastian Kehl (Borussia Dortmund)
36′ - Goal - Robert Lewandowski (Borussia Dortmund) GOALLL!!! LEWANDOWSKI FINISHES THAT BRILLIANTLY!! Kehl fires the ball into the path of the striker, and he immediately heads towards goal and into the Madrid penalty area. With Pepe closing in he picks his spot with a calm shot into the bottom right-hand corner. Clinical stuff from Lewandowski.
34′ - Dortmund work the ball well down the right through Piszczek and Lewandowski but then gift Madrid a free-kick as the latter of the two backs into Pepe. I doubt you will be surprised to hear that there was not much contact and still the defender hurled himself to the floor in agony. Classic Pepe.
32′ - It's been an impressive start by the visitors here in Dortmund, they are enjoying over 60 per cent of possession in this first half, not a bad stat considering they are the away team.
31′ - A long ball forward from Mats Hummels to Lewandowski nearly causes the Madrid defence trouble but the attacker is adjudged to have fouled Pepe as he challenges for the ball, and Madrid win a free-kick.
30′ - Madrid will be looking to break their Germany hoodoo tonight. They have won just one of their 23 previous away games against German opponents, with their match record as follows: W1, D6, L16.
28′ - That is never a foul! Luka Modric is penalised for supposedly fouling Mario Gotze despite clearly winning the ball. I'm not sure where the referee was looking there, he can't have been watching the challenge from the Croatian midfielder.
27′ - An unusual suspect is proving Dortmund's most dangerous player going forward at the moment - Sebastian Kehl. The captain forces Casillas into making a fine save from his curling effort from 20 yards as Dortmund go close to taking the lead.
26′ - Ronaldo slices an effort wide after jinxing away from the challenge of Piszczek on the left side of the Dortmund box. He looked furious with himself as the ball went harmlessly wide there. Few will have standards as high as him in all fairness!
25′ - Dortmund concede a couple of cheap fouls in quick succession as Lewandowski catches Alonso and then Reus fells Essien on the left.
23′ - GOOD PLAY FROM DI MARIA!! The Argentine attacker twists and turns his way into the box on the right for Madrid before unleashing a shot at goal, but it fails to trouble Weidenfeller and flies over the crossbar.
22′ - The ball almost falls kindly to Ronaldo on the edge of the Dortmund box but a vital touch from Neven Subotic takes it away from the Madrid man.
21′ - Ozil mounts Kevin Großkreutz as he chases a loose ball on the right-hand side, and unsurprisingly the referee blows his whistle to signal a free-kick for the home side. Unorthodox play from Ozil there!
20′ - Substitution Sami Khedira Luka Modric (Real Madrid CF)
19′ - On comes the former Tottenham man, and off goes Khedira. Modric will slot straight into the double pivot in midfield alongside Xabi Alonso.
18′ - Luka Modric is stripping off on the sidelines... out of his tracksuit into his kit, and it looks like Sami Khedira, who missed their last Liga match against Celta Vigo at the weekend, could be the man being forced off here.
