Girl, 10, Charged With Manslaughter For Killing Infant

A Maine girl, 10, is charged with manslaughter after she allegedly poisoned and suffocated an innocent infant girl. She is the youngest person in the state to be charged with manslaughter in at least 25 years — read on for more of the shocking details.
Three-month-old Brooklyn Foss-Greenaway in Maine was found dead after being suffocated and poisoned, and police are charging the babysitter's 10-year-old daughter for the crime.

Brooklyn died on July 8 after being left in the care of her babysitter, and police declared the death a homicide on Aug. 29. The next day, police charged the sitter's 10-year-old daughter with manslaughter.

Nicole Greenaway, the baby's mother, told The Bangor Daily News that a medication found in the infant's system was the same medicine the 10-year-old girl was taking.

"She [also] suffocated her by putting her hands over her face," Nicole told the newspaper. "There are bruises all over her face."

The 10-year-old, whose name is not being released by police, is reportedly now in the custody of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said. He would not disclose how the girl caused the infant's death.

The name of the girl's mother, who was babysitting the infant at the time of the incident and works with Nicole, is also being protected.

In the state of Maine, the death of any child under age 3 triggers an automatic investigation. Stephen said authorities uncovered some "troubling signs" before the state medical examiner declared the death a homicide, according to the Associated Press.

Stephen also said the girl is the youngest to be charged with manslaughter in the state in at least 25 years. Manslaughter charges are brought when a homicide is caused by reckless actions or criminal negligence, unlike murder, which usually involves an intentional act.

How sad. We hope the Greenaway family finds justice. What do YOU think HollyMoms?
