On the July 17 episode, as with every telecast, America's Got Talent plastered "Go Big, or Go Home" across the screen, but who really brought the "chills and the thrills and the spills?" (Thank you, Howard Stern) On a night that mattered most, the 12 acts that took the stage caught fire but quickly fizzled. The buzz and talent was there, but most failed to live up to their full potential.
The Untouchables:
This group of saucy dancers range from 8 years old and up, and they can dance like that? Crisp moves, smooth delivery, and passion tucked away in their glittery Tinker Bell-inspired costumes are sure to be enough to send America into a fury of speed voting. (Or maybe just me.)
Rock Star Juggler Mike Price:
Unicycle, daggers, and torches, oh my! It would have been far more "impressive" if he hadn't dropped a pin and maybe performed an interesting trick that we hadn't seen a million times before. The only captivating part of his routine was his assistant lying on a metal grate and willingly allowing him to pour gasoline over her. (Is she crazy?!)
Inspire the Fire, 'Firework' by Katy Perry:
Their infectious spirit trickled down into an inspiring performance — despite some wobbly vocals throughout and less-than-stellar dance moves. Maybe it was a combination of the red, white and blue ensemble and the Katy Perry anthem, but I dug my chips into that cheese. Will America vote them through to the finals?
(OK, I had to pull that one out of nowhere. Truth be told, that was horrible.)
Cristin Sandu:
Performing to Ellie Goulding's "Lights," he attempted to take his balancing act to new extremes. After he built his wobbly metal cylinder tower, it…fell… (Wow. I felt so bad for him, to work so hard and then have his dream literally crumble on live TV.)
Elusive:
Even struggling with hearing loss, he did not let that stop him from breaking out one of the better performances of the night (and I use that phrase quite loosely). He began his routine by walking down a flight of stairs on his hands, and while a huge chunk of the performance drug a little, he quickly brought it home at the end.
Jake Wesley Rogers, 'Toxic' by Britney Spears:
He took on a Britney Spears club hit, spun it around in the air, stripped it of the rowdy drum beats, mixed in some creepy strings (maybe from an old Marilyn Manson warehouse) and delivered a confident (but exhaustingly bizarre) performance. (Phew. Did you catch all that?)
All Wheel Sports:
Set to David Guetta and Sia's "Titanium," they were simply one of the best (and most explosive) of the night. They combined dancing, bikes flying through the air, trampolines…so. much. going. on. However, with the smaller venue, the high concentration of action was amplified times 100. (Can someone say X-treme sports? Yup.)
Wordspit and the Illest!:
It is always a risk to perform an original song (one that America doesn't know) on a competition show. Add to that the fact that the rapping portion of the song (or rather the whole thing) was mostly unintelligible. The lead singer did bring oodles of energy to the audience and worked it out like a pro. Will they go through to the semifinals? (Who knows.)
Jacob Williams:
Awkward. Funny. Awkward. Granted, I'm not a huge fan of comedians, but this guy was a huge oddball riddle wrapped up in a Rubicks cube of awkward. (Did I say awkward yet?) "Even the way you walk is awkward," commented Sharon.
All Beef Patty, 'Let's Hear It for the Boy' by Deniece Williams:
Even the once impressive vocalist in All Beef Patty seemed off her game tonight. With shirtless football dancers cheering her on, she was "a big ole Nicki Minaj up in here," according to host Nick Cannon, but lacked the razzle-dazzle to command the stage.
Spencer Horsman:
He took his own life into his hands tonight as he was dangled 15 feet over about 100 death-inviting spikes. Locked inside a big security bag and wrapped in a metal vest, he stared the Grim Reaper in the face and won!
Lightwire Theater:
The story of a lost little blue duckling was bright to life with exotic colors and fanciful movements. If I hadn't been so enthralled with the performance, I would have more to say. Easily the BEST of the night. Period.
And that's a wrap! It is all in America's hands as they put through four acts tomorrow night. Who will they be?
