France: 'Al-Qaeda gunman' takes hostages at Toulouse bank

A gunman claiming to have links to al-Qaeda has taken four people hostage at a bank in Toulouse, southern France, it has been claimed.

The man fired at least one shot in the CIC bank, which has been cordoned off, a police union source said.

The scene is close to the house in which Islamic extremist Mohamed Merah, who also said he was a member of al-Qaeda, was shot dead by police after a 32-hour siege in March.

The 23-year-old killed seven people in and around Toulouse after opening fire from a scooter at French paratroopers and outside a Jewish school.

French TV station BFM said the branch director and three others were being held hostage inside the bank in today's incident.

According to reports the gunman has asked to negotiate with the same RAID police force that killed Merah, who authorities said had received training in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
