expected to dress up if they want to be admitted to the Royal
Enclosure.
The organisers of one of the world's best-known race meeting held in
mid-June had already warned they were going to call a halt to the
increasingly unusual dress styles seen over recent years.They have now
sent out a written message to ensure everyone is clear on the rules.
Out go fascinators from the Royal Enclosure - so the Duchess of
Cambridge and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie had better remember that
- and in comes a headpiece that is 4" (10cm) or more in diameter.
In other words, a hat that covers the crown.
A lady who is watching the races from the Grandstand area - and not
mingling with the royals in the Royal Enclosure - will still be
allowed to wear a fascinator.
But, for the grandest set, the dress code reminds women they must have
two straps of one inch (2.5cm) or more holding up their dress. Halter
necks, off the shoulder or strapless are very definitely out.
Midriffs must be covered.
While trouser suits are permitted, they must be full length and of
matching material and colour.
Jackets and pashminas are accepted by those who make the rules but,
they insist, the garments over which they are worn must still comply
with the code.
Gentlemen do not escape the dress code either, being told they must
wear a waistcoat and tie, not a cravat, a black or grey top hat and
black shoes.
The customisation of top hats (with, for instance, coloured ribbons or
bands) is not allowed.
