UEFA president Michel Platini has hit out at Sir Alex Ferguson claiming the Manchester United boss belittled the Europa League.
Fergie said playing in the competition on Thursdays is the 'penalty' his side must pay for their failure to advance in the Champions League.
United dropped into Europe's second competition following their shock 2-1 defeat against Basel on Wednesday evening.
Now Platini has accused Ferguson of showing the competition a lack of respect, insisting it is an 'amazing tournament'.
"The world does not revolve around England," said the Frenchman. "I like England, its football is fantastic and its supporters are wonderful.
"But you shouldn't criticise the Europa League just because you've played in three Champions League finals.
"The Europa League is a brilliant competition, it's amazing. I know Mr Ferguson would have preferred to be in the Champions League but so would many clubs who don't have that possibility."
•United defender faces long absence
Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic will miss the remainder of the season.
The Serbia international was stretchered off with a knee injury during United's 2-1 Champions League defeat to Basel.
And the United boss confirmed the 30-year-old will not be seen in a red shirt again this term as he requires surgery to repair the problem.
Ferguson told an Old Trafford press conference: "We thought it was a bad one and unfortunately he's out for the season.
"He sees the specialist on Monday to work out the progress of when he has his operation. It won't be immediately as we have to let the swelling come down.
"It's a blow. It's not unexpected but it's still bad news. "
